About Maxwell Museum of Anthropology

In 1932, the University of New Mexico opened the doors of Albuquerque's first public museum, which was then-called the Museum of Anthropology. Today, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology is a center of research, teaching, community engagement and collaboration, and public communication on our shared human story from our earliest origins until today.

At its founding, the Museum began as a place to study and display archaeological collections from field projects conducted by UNM’s Department of Anthropology field schools throughout New Mexico. Today, the collections have grown to more than three million archaeological and ethnographic objects from around the world. They also include osteological remains from our unique body donor program and rich archival resources including field records and more than 100,000 photographs.

Through cutting edge anthropological research; permanent, temporary, and online exhibitions; community partnerships; and educational programs, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology strives to meet its mission of “working toward greater understandings of the fullness of human experiences in the Southwest and the world”.

Parking: Free parking is available in designated spaces just west of the museum parallel to University Blvd. Parking permits are available at the Museum front desk or in the Museum store.
