College Funding Opportunities

In addition to the support provided by the College of Arts & Sciences to departments for travel and other expenses, the College offers several funding opportunities to support the research and scholarship of our community.

Writing Subvention Support Program

The Subvention Support Program funds up to $3,000 towards the development of monograph, monograph chapter, or other research publications. This includes editing, indexing, and publication fees, and is contingent on the availability of funds. Publication fees may include copyrights and/or preparation of maps, images, and figures, and translations.

Proposals are accepted twice per year through InfoReady on September 15 and February 15. The number of awards will depend on available funds, but at least 13 awards per year are anticipated.

Proposals must include:

    • executed contract/agreements for publication.
    • evidenced progress towards substantial completion of the monograph.
    • author’s C.V.
    • a budget and justification showing the total expense, funding sources, and total request.

Travel Support

The College’s Travel Support funds assist in the communication of research results by providing up to $2,000.00 in additional travel funds to professional conferences, workshops, and community events. Any continuing faculty member in the College of Arts & Sciences, including tenure track faculty, research faculty, and lecturers are eligible to apply.

Proposals are accepted twice per year through InfoReady on September 15 and February 15. The number of awards will depend on available funds, but at least 20 awards per year are anticipated.

 Proposals must include:

  • materials documenting the event to be traveled to (this could be a web link).
  • a brief narrative of less than 250 words describing the impact of the proposed travel on the proposer’s research trajectory.
  • a budget and justification showing the total expense, funding sources, and total request.

Arts & Sciences Support for Undergraduate Research Experience (ASSURE)

This program is designed to foster faculty-student research collaborations, and, as such, we are particularly eager to fund work through which students have the opportunity to engage in thoughtful and progressively sophisticated work central to the overall research program of the principal investigator. Because the awards are part of larger efforts to foster a culture of faculty-undergraduate research collaboration at UNM, we would like to see proposals engaging lower-division students and students from underrepresented groups. Proposals will be evaluated based on the funding priorities of the ASSURE initiative, which include providing resources for students who see research activity as key to their overall trajectory at UNM and for research programs that are committed to solid outcomes for undergraduate researchers and promote inclusive excellence.

Community-Based Research Initiative

In partnership with the Center for Regional Studies, the Community-Based Research Initiative (CBRI) supports projects that engage with a New Mexico or Southwest community and works to develop or help with practical and real-life solution(s) to the challenges facing people in the 21st century. Projects are co-lead by a faculty member from a department or program in the College of Arts & Sciences. The project should be a shared and equitable building of a relationship between the community-based partner(s) and faculty, and must also be in accordance with CRS’s mission and emphasis on New Mexico, the Southwest region, U.S. Mexico Borderlands, and the Americas. One community-based research project will be funded during FY24 with financial support totaling $30,000.

Applications are now open and are due May 3, 2024. The Call for Proposals is below, which includes a link to the application packet under "Proposal Format & Guidelines for Submission".
