About Meteorite Museum
In 1944, UNM’s Institute of Meteoritics (IOM) became one of the first institutions in the world devoted to the study of meteorites. In 1974, the IOM opened the Meteorite Museum, which is a major educational resource for not only the University but New Mexico schools as well. The museum is visited by thousands of people every year, including many elementary and high school students from Albuquerque and the surrounding area.
The museum displays many fine samples of stony, stony iron, and iron meteorites from the Institute’s collection. The meteorites on display in the museum are only a small part of the research and teaching collection, which includes over 5,000 specimens of over 650 samples. All of the meteorites in the collection are available for study by researchers within the Institute and throughout the world.
The Meteorite Museum houses many incredible meteorites from the extensive collection of the Institute of Meteoritics but the highlight of the Museum is a one-ton piece of the stony meteorite named Norton County, which fell in Kansas in 1948.
