Transcription factors (TFs) are proteins that regulate gene expression, which is important in many processes like cell differentiation, immune response, and the cell cycle. Their dysfunction has been implicated in human diseases, like cancer and immune deficiencies. Despite their crucial role, it is still largely unknown how TFs select and bind to their target genes. It is hypothesized that phase separation is implicated in the function of TFs. Phase separation allows formation of biomolecular condensates, which are highly concentrated droplets of proteins and nucleic acids distinct from the surrounding liquid. The goal of my project is to use machine learning and experimental methods to understand how condensate formation of transcription factors allows for TF selectivity.
