Project: Structural Causes of Nursing Shortages in New Mexico: Wage Disparities, Travel Nursing, and WICHE

About Seeun Choi

This research project investigates healthcare worker shortages in rural and underserved regions of New Mexico, with a particular focus on nursing workforce retention and geographic distribution. The study will examine how financial incentive programs, such as WICHE and other loan-for-service initiatives, influence long-term retention, while also exploring how wage disparities between staff nurses and traveling nurses may affect job satisfaction and turnover. By analyzing publicly available workforce and health access data alongside survey responses from healthcare workers, this research aims to identify structural barriers and contribute to more sustainable solutions for improving healthcare access in underserved communities across New Mexico.
