About Kyana Montoya

As an undergraduate, Kyana was introduced to research by her Graduate Assistant in her Molecular Methods course. At the time, she wasn’t aware that these experiences were available to her so she was fascinated by her GA’s project. This led to her working in the lab, which ultimately ignited her passion for avian psychology and evolution. Now, as a Museum Research Traineeship Fellow, Kyana is expanding her knowledge – and her community – through this very unique program. “Curiosity is the binding factor of researchers in nearly every field,” she says, “so getting the opportunity to indulge that curiosity through field and lab work, data analysis, and collaboration has been the best part of grad school. Getting to hold and handle a live bird is also a feeling unmatched to any other, and it still excites me every time.”
