About Mark Campbell

Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mark Campbell is a double major in History and Latin American Studies and is currently conducting research under the supervision of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Mark previously had fellowships in the Arts & Sciences Support for Undergraduate Research (ASSURE) and El Puente Research.

Their current project focuses on the Sandinista Revolution in 1980s Nicaragua, and specifically examines how female guerilla fighters transitioned from being revolutionaries in armed struggle to government roles within the post-conflict state. Central to the project are larger notions of gender, violence, memory, and the promises and limitations of leftwing revolution. Building on the immense scholarship of women's participation in the Sandinista Revolution, in combination with interviews conducted with former Sandinista women, Mark hopes to reconceptualize understandings of the Sandinista political project and the role of women within it.
