Project: SIRT1's Impact on Mitochondrial Calcium Signaling in Hair Cells of Danio rerio

About Christiana Eirene Concepcion

Hearing loss affects 1 in 8 Americans aged 12 or older, often due to damage to the inner ear hair cells that rely on calcium signaling for function. This project investigates how protein SIRT1 influences mitochondrial calcium signaling in these cells using a zebrafish model genetically modified to express a red-light activated ion channel called ChRmine and a fluorescent calcium indicator. By modulating SIRT1 activity and monitoring calcium levels, this research aims to uncover potential pathways for protecting hair cells and developing therapies for age-related hearing loss.
